Bill Gates shared details of a three-hour dinner with President-elect Donald Trump, discussing global healthcare issues such as HIV, polio, and innovation in medical research.
Billionaire Bill Gates recently shared details of a three-hour dinner he had with President-elect Donald Trump after his victory in the 2024 U.S. elections. Gates described the meeting as engaging, expressing that he was “impressed” by Trump during their conversation. The dinner took place at Mar-a-Lago and included Gates, his manager Larry Cohen, Trump, and Trump’s chief of staff Susie Wiles. The discussion covered several topics, with a primary focus on global healthcare issues.
Gates, who is deeply involved in global health through the Gates Foundation, spoke about the advancements being made in healthcare, especially regarding the ongoing work to find a cure for HIV. He mentioned that while the foundation is still in the early stages, they are optimistic about the progress they’re making. Gates asked Trump if similar efforts, like the rapid vaccine innovation during the COVID-19 pandemic, could be applied to HIV research. Gates revealed that both he and Trump were excited about the possibilities of accelerating healthcare innovation in the same way.
Polio also came up during the discussion. Gates highlighted that while significant progress has been made in the fight against polio, the disease could resurface if efforts to eliminate it are halted. He stressed the importance of staying committed to the fight, as they are “very close” to eradicating the disease. Trump seemed keen on learning how he could help make this milestone a reality during his upcoming term.
Gates expressed appreciation for Trump’s engagement in the conversation, noting that he felt Trump was energized and eager to contribute to driving innovation in global health. Gates was impressed with the level of interest and enthusiasm Trump showed during their discussion.
This meeting marks the latest in a series of high-profile meetings between Trump and influential business leaders following his 2024 election win. Other billionaires like Jeff Bezos of Amazon and Mark Zuckerberg of Meta have also visited Trump at Mar-a-Lago since his victory.
