Norovirus cases surge in US: What is it? Know symptoms, how it spreads and prevention tips

The United States is witnessing a significant rise in norovirus cases, with 91 new cases reported in a single week in December, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This marks a notable increase from the 69 cases recorded in the last week of November.

What is Norovirus?

Norovirus, often called the stomach flu or stomach bug, is a highly contagious virus causing vomiting and diarrhea. Warning Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms typically appear 12 to 48 hours after exposure and include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, stomach pain, fever, headache, and body aches. Severe dehydration is a major concern, with signs like reduced urination, dry mouth, dizziness, and unusual sleepiness or fussiness.

How Norovirus Spreads

The virus spreads through direct contact with infected individuals, consuming contaminated food or drinks, or touching contaminated surfaces.

Prevention Tips

The CDC recommends the following measures to prevent infection:

Wash hands thoroughly before eating or drinking.

Wash fruits, vegetables, and shellfish carefully.

Clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces.

Use hot water to wash laundry.

If infected, it’s crucial to stay home for two days after symptoms subside to prevent spreading the virus.
