North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has reportedly banned hotdogs and introduced strict penalties for divorcing couples in a bizarre new policy aimed at curbing Western influence and perceived anti-socialist behaviour. According to reports, Kim, 40, has declared the popular fast food dish "too Western." Serving hotdogs is now considered an act of treason. Citizens caught cooking or selling the American sausage-based meal risk being sent to labor camps.

A street vendor from Ryanggang province told The Sun that sales of budae-jjigae, a Korean-American fusion dish made with sausages, have completely stopped. The dish, which includes Korean spices, and beans, was imported from South Korea in 2017 but is now banned. Authorities have warned that anyone caught selling it will face severe consequences.

Kim has also imposed harsh punishments on divorcing couples. Both spouses will now face up to six months in labor camps, a significant escalation from previous laws, which punished only the party seeking the divorce. Women could face longer sentences under the new rules.

A local resident revealed that recently divorced couples were immediately sent to labor camps after their court hearings. Divorce rates reportedly rose during the COVID-19 pandemic due to financial strain, and authorities are now cracking down with threats of public humiliation and expulsion from the ruling Korean Workers’ Party.

Kim Jong Un, who has ruled North Korea since 2011, is known for introducing strict and unusual laws to maintain control. This latest move is part of a broader effort to suppress what the regime views as capitalist and anti-socialist influences.
