Amid H-1B visa debate, US tech workers seek end to foreign student work permits: How will it impact Indians?

Donald Trump’s supporters backing his “Make America Great Again” agenda are targeting the Optional Practical Training (OPT) programme, a key pathway for international students, including many from India, to secure work experience and transition to H-1B visas in the US.

The OPT programme allows international students on F-1 visas to work in the US for up to 12 months after graduation. Those with STEM degrees can extend this period by an additional 24 months, providing up to three years of work experience. For many Indian students, who make up the largest group of international students in the US, OPT is a stepping stone to obtaining an H-1B visa, which permits skilled foreign nationals to work in the US for up to six years.

Critics argue that the OPT programme, initially meant for short-term skill development, is being misused as a long-term immigration pathway. Groups like the US Tech Workers claim that OPT unfairly competes with American graduates for jobs and operates without Congressional approval. They also accuse universities of promoting the programme to attract international students as a source of revenue.

The Washington Alliance of Technology Workers (WashTech) has challenged OPT in court, but a recent lower court decision upheld its legality. However, calls to end the programme persist.

If the programme is scrapped, it could significantly impact Indian students, who heavily rely on OPT for career growth and H-1B opportunities. Many view the US as a top study destination, but eliminating OPT may reduce its appeal, particularly for those seeking professional experience post-graduation.
