California wildfires live updates: Over 10,000 structures destroyed, thousands without power, death toll rises to 10

At least ten people have been killed and thousands of buildings destroyed as wildfires tear through the Los Angeles area, according to Associated Press. The fast-moving flames forced residents to flee smoke-filled canyons and neighborhoods, some home to celebrities.

The fires, which began on Tuesday, were fueled by strong Santa Ana winds that reached over 70 mph (112 kph). While the winds weakened on Thursday, the National Weather Service warned they could still spread the flames. Winds are expected to strengthen again Thursday night, with another wave possible next week.

California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that over 1,400 firefighters are battling the blazes. Firefighting teams from Oregon, Washington, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona have joined the efforts.

The Palisades Fire, the worst in LA history, has destroyed or damaged more than 5,300 structures in Pacific Palisades. The hilly coastal area now lies in ruins, with dozens of blocks flattened and homes reduced to ashes. Iconic landmarks, including part of Palisades Charter High School, were also destroyed. The school has appeared in Hollywood productions like the horror movie Carrie and the TV series Teen Wolf.

Among the many residents who lost their homes were actor Billy Crystal and his wife Janice, whose house of 45 years was reduced to rubble. Authorities warn the death toll may rise as crews begin searching through the rubble.

Notably, wildfires burning out of control in the greater Los Angeles area has forced nearly 1,80,000 more from their homes. The authorities further said the total number of deaths is unknown, according to a report by NBC News.

The Palisades Fire has burned over 17,234 acres. It has caused the destruction of 1,000 buildings and remains completely uncontained, marking it as the most devastating fire in Los Angeles history.
California governor Newsom informed that the containment of the Palisades Fire is currently at 6 per cent.

In a post on X, he wrote, "Containment of the #PalisadesFire is now at 6%. Thank you to our brave firefighters working around the clock to combat the blaze fueled by hurricane-force winds. Please continue to heed emergency orders from local officials and first responders."

Federal govt to cover six months of wildfire costs

Following the devastating wildfires in California, US President Joe Biden announced that the federal government will cover the costs of measures to protect lives and property in Southern California for six months.

Biden also spoke about the deployment of extensive federal resources, including firefighters, aircraft, and military personnel, to assist in combating the fires and safeguarding affected communities.

In a post on X, he wrote, "I'm announcing that the federal government will cover 100% of the cost of measures to protect lives and property in Southern California for six months. I've told the Governor and officials to spare no expense and do whatever they need to contain the fires and protect families." (ANI)
