Pakistan continues to struggle with one of the highest rates of child marriage in the world. The legal age for marriage is set at 18 for males, but only 16 for females. This disparity exists even though international standards recognise 18 as the minimum age for both genders.
Reports show that approximately 30% of girls in Pakistan are married before the age of 18. According to UNICEF, 18.9 million girls in Pakistan are married before they turn 18, and 4.6 million are married before reaching 16. This issue is particularly prevalent in regions like Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit Baltistan, where cultural and societal norms often encourage early marriages.
Activists have been calling for stronger laws and severe punishments to combat child marriage. An incident from last year in Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, highlighted the ongoing problem. Police arrested a 72-year-old man who attempted to marry a 12-year-old girl. The marriage contract, or nikkah, was about to take place when authorities stepped in. The girl’s father, Alam Syed, had agreed to marry her off to the elderly man, Habib Khan, for 500,000 Pakistani rupees. Although Khan was arrested, Alam Syed managed to escape.
Despite efforts to address this issue, child marriage remains a serious challenge in Pakistan. Activists continue to push for stricter laws and enforcement to protect children from early marriages and the harmful consequences that come with them.
