Residents have reported that both men and women have been losing large patches of hair over the past few days, with people becoming completely bald within a week of the onset of hair loss.
In a concerning incident in Maharashtra's Buldhana district, several residents from three villages have experienced sudden hair loss, resulting in baldness within just a week. Health officials are investigating the possibility that water pollution, potentially caused by fertilizers, is the culprit behind this alarming trend. To determine the cause, officials have collected water samples from the affected area, as well as hair and skin samples from the villagers for testing.
The three affected villages—Borgaon, Kalwad, and Hingna—are located in the Shegaon tehsil of Buldhana district. Residents have reported that both men and women have been losing large patches of hair over the past few days, with people becoming completely bald within a week of the onset of hair loss.
In videos, several people show how a light pull on their hair easily causes strands to come out. Others have highlighted the bald patches that have appeared within just a week.
The widespread fear among residents of the three villages has led to a visit from senior health officials from the district.
A health department team that visited the villages reported that approximately 50 people have been identified with this hair loss issue, and doctors are concerned that this number may increase. Samples of skin and hair have been collected for analysis, and medical professionals suspect that the rapid hair loss could be linked to polluted water or an underlying health condition. While awaiting test results to determine the cause of the mass hair loss, doctors have advised the villagers to prioritise their health.
Shegaon health officer Dr Deepali Bahekar told reporters that medical treatment for those affected has started.
“The department has started medical treatment of the patients as per the symptoms, and the advice from skincare specialists is also being taken,” Bahekar said, according to PTI.
