A rare celestial event is happening tonight, where six planets will align in the night sky and can be seen with the naked eye. This event, called the planetary parade, is an exciting opportunity for space lovers and stargazers. According to NASA, the planets involved in this alignment are Mars, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. You don't need a telescope to see most of them!
When and where to watch the planetary parade
The planetary parade can be seen on January 21 and January 25. Four of the planets – Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn – will be visible to the naked eye just after sunset. Uranus and Neptune will be harder to spot without a telescope. The best time to see the planets is about 45 minutes after sunset.
Here's how the planets will appear in the sky:
- Venus and Saturn will shine in the southwest.
- Jupiter will be visible in the southeast.
- Mars will appear in the east.
The whole display will last around three hours, with Venus and Saturn eventually setting in the west. To get the best view, find a dark place away from city lights and look towards the southwestern horizon.
How to identify the planets
- Venus will be the brightest and most visible planet.
- Mars will look like a bright lightbulb due to its red colour.
- Saturn will appear as a small dot in the western sky.
- Jupiter will also look like a small dot but will be in the southern sky.
Uranus and Neptune will be visible as tiny, bright dots, but you won't be able to see them with the naked eye because they are far away from the other planets.
When can you see mercury?
Mercury, the planet closest to the sun, will not be part of this planetary parade. However, it will join the lineup by the end of February. The planetary parade will reach its peak between February 28 and March 12, offering the best view of this celestial event.
