The rituals of Pongal, such as offering food to the Sun and decorating cattle, reflect this close relationship with the environment.
Pongal, one of the most cherished festivals in South India, marks the beginning of the harvest season and is celebrated with immense joy and devotion. This four-day festival, rooted in Tamil culture, is a time to offer gratitude to the Sun God for the agricultural abundance and the end of winter. The celebration also fosters unity, family bonding, and a deep connection to nature.
Pongal 2025: Dates and Muhurat
Pongal in 2025 is set to begin on January 13 with Bhogi Pandigai, followed by Thai Pongal on January 14, which coincides with Makar Sankranti. The festival continues with Mattu Pongal on January 15 and culminates on January 16 with Kaanum Pongal. The auspicious Bhogi Sankranti moment will take place at 9:03 AM on January 14, marking the Sun God's transition into the zodiac sign of Capricorn.
Pongal 2025: Rituals and Celebrations
The festival starts with Bhogi Pandigai, when families clean their homes, decorate with flowers and lights, and remove old, unused items to welcome new beginnings. The next day, Thai Pongal (Surya Pongal) is observed, where people worship the Sun God. Homes are adorned with Pongal Kolam, traditional rice flour and clay decorations.
On Mattu Pongal, cattle are celebrated and honoured for their role in farming. Cows are decorated with beads, bells, turmeric, and garlands as a mark of respect for their contribution to agriculture. The final day, Kaanum Pongal, is a day for families to gather, exchange gifts, and enjoy a festive feast together.
Pongal 2025: History
Pongal’s origins date back over a thousand years, to the Sangam Age in Tamil history. Originally a festival to honour the Sun God (Surya) and other deities for the blessings of a good harvest, it is now a time to celebrate agricultural prosperity and community spirit.
One popular legend associated with Pongal is the story of Lord Krishna and Lord Indra. It is said that Lord Krishna saved the villagers of Gokul from a destructive storm sent by Lord Indra by lifting the Govardhan Hill on his finger, sheltering the people and their cattle. This myth further emphasises the deep connection between the festival and nature.
Pongal 2025: Significance
Pongal is much more than a religious occasion—it is a vibrant cultural celebration that unites families and communities. It honours the land, acknowledges the hard work of farmers, and celebrates the bond between people and nature. The rituals of Pongal, such as offering food to the Sun and decorating cattle, reflect this close relationship with the environment.
Traditional music, dance, and festive activities fill the air with joy, making Pongal not only a time for religious observance but also a communal gathering. Whether you're a first-time celebrant or a long-time participant, Pongal serves as a reminder of the importance of gratitude, family, and unity.
