Indian Railways, founded in 1853, is the fourth-largest railway network in the world, connecting every corner of India. It offers a diverse range of passenger and goods trains, including popular express services like the Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, and Vande Bharat Express. Collectively, Indian Railways serves millions of travelers annually.

The majority of its revenue comes from ticket sales, which are provided to passengers at an average discount of 46%. Each year, Indian Railways grants significant subsidies to passengers across all categories, amounting to Rs 56,993 crore. Additionally, the transportation of goods forms another key revenue stream.

Among its services, the Rajdhani Express, particularly the KSR Bengaluru Rajdhani Express, is a major source of income. Introduced in 1969, the Rajdhani Express connects New Delhi with state capitals and is the most profitable train for Northern Railways. According to Indian Railways data, the KSR Bengaluru Rajdhani Express, running between Hazrat Nizamuddin in Delhi and KSR Bengaluru City Junction, generated the highest revenue in the 2022–2023 fiscal year. With 509,510 passengers during this period, the train earned Rs 1,760.67 crore for the national transporter.

Indian Railways is also making a sizable profit on other trains, such as the Sealdah Rajdhani Express and the Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express. During the fiscal year 2022–2023, Sealdah Rajdhani Express transported 509,164 people between New Delhi and Kolkata, generating Rs 1,288.17 crore. Following closely the Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express generated Rs 1,262.91 crore in FY 2022-23, transporting 474,605 passengers between New Delhi and Dibrugarh, Assam.
