INDIA
According to flight-tracking service Flightradar24, there were 146 delayed flights and three cancellations, with an average delay of nearly 30 minutes for both departures and arrivals in Delhi.
Dense fog has shrouded Delhi, prompting Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) to implement low-visibility procedures to maintain operational efficiency. An advisory stated, “Low visibility procedures are currently in effect at Delhi airport. All flight operations are normal at the moment. Passengers are encouraged to check with their airlines for the latest flight information.” Despite the weather challenges, most flights are reportedly running on time, although travelers should stay alert regarding any updates.
On Friday, December 27, early morning rains and lightning added to the cold wave affecting Delhi and nearby regions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) linked these adverse conditions to an active western disturbance, forecasting thunderstorms, hail, and moderate rainfall across northwestern and central India on December 27 and 28.
According to flight-tracking service Flightradar24, there were 146 delayed flights and three cancellations, with an average delay of nearly 30 minutes for both departures and arrivals in Delhi. Fortunately, there were no significant disruptions reported.
Airline Advisories for Passengers
IndiGo: The airline urged travelers to prepare in advance due to the likelihood of intermittent rain throughout the day. "We recommend checking your flight status before heading to the airport. Safe travels!"
IndiGo also noted potential weather-related issues in Udaipur and offered options for refunds or rescheduling for affected flights.
Air India: Air India cautioned passengers about possible delays due to rain and advised them to leave for the airport earlier while monitoring flight updates. “Flights to and from Delhi may be affected by rain. Guests are encouraged to start their journey early as traffic may be slow,” the airline stated.
SpiceJet: SpiceJet echoed similar sentiments, advising travelers to consistently check their flight statuses due to possible weather disruptions. “Due to adverse weather conditions in Delhi, all departures and arrivals may be impacted. Passengers should verify their flight status regularly.”
The winter months from December to February present significant operational challenges for airlines, including reduced visibility from fog, strong winds, and crowded airports. To address these issues, airlines utilise precision landing systems, specially trained pilots, and strategic contingency plans.
Measures Implemented by Airlines
IndiGo has trained 80% of its 5,000 pilots for CAT III operations that allow landings in near-zero visibility. Their Airbus fleet is equipped with CAT III systems capable of landing in visibility as low as 75 meters. They have also allocated extra fuel per flight and stationed crews near airports for quick deployment while employing meteorologists with military expertise for real-time weather updates.
Air India has focused on long-haul and metro-to-metro flights to minimize disruptions and increased its number of CAT III-certified pilots. The airline introduced a “Fog Care” initiative that provides free rescheduling or refunds for impacted passengers.
With these proactive measures in place, both Delhi Airport and airlines are striving to reduce disruptions caused by fog and rain. Passengers are advised to stay informed and plan their travel accordingly to navigate the challenges associated with winter weather.
