The Delhi-Mumbai expressway project which promises to revolutionise Indian infrastructure has encountered significant delays. According to a Jagran report, there have been more delays on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, which is expected to cut the travel time between the two cities to 12 hours. On Friday, Harsh Malhotra, the Minister of State (MoS) for Road Transport and Highways, declared that the expressway would now be finished by 2026. At first, January 2023 was the expected completion date. Due to logistical and technical difficulties, the project has experienced numerous delays.
Land acquisition, especially from the general population, is one of the primary reasons for the delays, according to Harsh Malhotra. "Work is progressing, but technical and practical problems, especially with land acquisition, have caused setbacks," he said. The project's completion date has changed several times since it began in March 2019.
The difficulties in constructing the Delhi-Vadodara stretch were also noted by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. He disclosed that IIT Kharagpur experts are looking into damages brought on by the intense monsoon rains in several areas of the Sohna-Dausa stretch. At their own expense, the contractors are fixing the damage, and if any flaws are discovered, severe punishment will be taken.
A portion of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is partially operational. In February 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first segment, which connected Dausa in Rajasthan with Sohna in Haryana. Earlier this week, another part was opened in Rajasthan.
Currently, about 630 kilometers of the total 1,386 kilometers have been opened to traffic in various sections. Notable sections include Sohna-Dausa-Sawai Madhopur (293 km) and Jhalawar-MP/Gujarat border (245 km). Authorities are confident that the 845-kilometer stretch from Sohna to Vadodara will be fully operational by March 2025. Subsequent sections, crucially linking to Mumbai's JNPT port, Jewar Airport in Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi's DND Flyway, are expected to follow.
