The Malayalam language black comedy action thriller Rifle Club was released in the cinemas on December 19. Directed by Aashiq Abu, the film marks Anurag Kashyap's debut in Malayalam cinema and rapper Hanumankind's acting debut. Rifle Club received unanimous love from the audiences and critics, and was a commercial success.
Now, within a month of its theatrical release, Rifle Club began streaming on Netflix in the original Malayalam language and the dubbed versions in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi languages on January 16. The OTT giant took to its social media handles on Thursday, shared the announcement poster, and wrote, "The first rule of Rifle club, you don’t mess with the members of the club. Watch Rifle Club, now on Netflix." The film's logline of Netflix reads as, "A famed actor turns to an old rifle club to prepare for a hunting role. But chaos erupts when a couple fleeing an arms dealer winds up there as well."
After the release of Rifle Club, Anurag Kashyap shared his experience of working in Malayalam cinema and said that Bollywood won't ever be able to make a film like this. Talking to Gulf News, the filmmaker said, "The working ethics are phenomenal! There’s no star system, no massive vanity vans. Everyone’s together. Compare that to Bollywood, where actors are isolated, with entourages and vanity. That camaraderie reflects in the film. Hindi cinema could never make a Rifle Club. They’d rather remake it. Honestly, I feel more at home in South India, where I’ve found my tribe. Here storytelling trumps all."
Written by Syam Pushkaran, Dileesh Karunakaran, and Suhas, Rifle Club also features Vijayaraghavan, Dileesh Pothan, Anurag Kashyap, Vani Viswanath, Suresh Krishna, Vineeth Kumar and Surabhi Lakshmi. The filming took place in Mundakayam, the Rajahmundry forest, Thrissur, and Ernakulam.
