ENTERTAINMENT
At just 15 years old, the actress tied the knot with Jayanta Mukherjee, son of the renowned film producer, music composer, and singer Hemant Kumar.
This yesteryear actress ruled not only Hindi but Bengali cinema in the 70s. The actress, known for her attractive smile, dominated films during the 1970s and 80s. Not many know that the actress got married at the very early age of 15, and post-marriage only she swiftly rose to stardom. We are talking about none other than Moushumi Chatterjee.
At just 15 years old, the actress tied the knot with Jayanta Mukherjee, son of the renowned film producer, music composer, and singer Hemant Kumar. With the encouragement and support of both her husband and father-in-law, Chatterjee embarked on a career in acting following her marriage.
Chatterjee reminisced about her debut film Balika Badhu, which was released in 1967. She had shared an amusing anecdote about when director Tarun Majumdar chose her for the role. As fate would have it, she was introduced to Hemant Kumar, who would later become her father-in-law. Upon meeting her, Hemant Kumar remarked, "She...She will be able to do it, she is very young." Moushumi couldn't help but feel a surge of anger at his comment, jokingly admitting that she wanted to strangle him.
Chatterjee's rise to fame began with her Bengali film, Parineeta (1969). However, it was her Bollywood debut in Anuraag (1972) that catapulted her to stardom. Over the next decade, she delivered a string of blockbuster hits, including Benam, Humshakal, Roti Kapda aur Makaan, Swarag Narak, Maang Bharo Sajna, and Prem Bandhan. Her unprecedented success earned her the title of the highest-paid actress of her time.
Chatterjee once openly confessed her admiration for the late actor Vinod Khanna, revealing that she had a major crush on him. She was deeply fond of the actor and even went on to say that no one could match his dashing good looks. Meanwhile, she has made sporadic appearances on the big screen. Her last notable role was in the 2015 film Piku, where she shared screen space with Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, and Irrfan Khan.
