The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Exam is considered one of the toughest exams in India. To pass this challenging test, candidates dedicate several hours a day to studying. Every year, thousands of people attempt the exam to secure positions such as IAS, IFS, IRS, and IPS officers. However, only a small number of them succeed in this highly competitive exam, which has three stages: the preliminary exam, the main exam, and an interview.

Today, we’ll discuss the inspiring journey of Dr. Vikas Divyakirti, a renowned professor, author, and one of the most respected educators in the country.

If you’re preparing for the UPSC Civil Services exam, you must be familiar with the name Dr. Vikas Divyakirti, often referred to as a digital mentor. He is highly regarded as a motivational speaker and has gained immense popularity among aspirants for his guidance and insights. Dr. Divyakirti, the founder and Managing Director of Drishti IAS, is known for his expertise in General Studies, particularly in Indian Polity, History, and Current Affairs. After completing a Master’s degree in Hindi Literature in 1995, he appeared for the civil services exam in 1996 and achieved an impressive All India Rank (AIR) of 384 on his first attempt.  

His teaching goes beyond academic domains, exploring philosophy, ethics, and values that appeal to a wider audience, even if he specialises in UPSC subjects.

Instagram boasts several dedicated pages featuring short clips of Dr. Vikas Divyakirti's lectures. One particularly popular fan page, with over 60,000 followers, attests to the widespread admiration he commands. Additionally, his personal YouTube channel boasts 2.95 million subscribers, and his coaching center, Drishti IAS, enjoys a subscriber base exceeding 11 million.

Dr. Vikas Divyakirti was born in a middle-class household in Haryana on December 26, 1973. His mother taught PGT in Bhiwani, and his father was a distinguished professor of Hindi literature at Maharishi Dayanand University. The two older brothers of Vikas Divyakirti are a DIG at the CBI and a software engineer in the United States. 

Dr. Vikas Divyakirti attended Saraswati Shishu Mandir in the Bhiwani area of Haryana for his education. He attended Zakir Husain Delhi College at Delhi University for his undergraduate studies, where he graduated with a BA in Hindi. He continued his education by earning MA, MPhil, and PhD degrees, as well as postgraduate degrees in Hindi and English. He is positioned as one of the most qualified instructors for the UPSC exams in India because of his strong educational background.

Dr. Vikas Divyakirti began teaching at Delhi University after completing his studies. At the same time, under pressure from his family, he started studying for the UPSC exams, eventually earning a remarkable AIR 384 in 1996. Following a brief stint in the Ministry of Home Affairs, he made the decision to pursue his love of teaching and established the Drishti IAS coaching centre in Mukherjee Nagar, Delhi, in 1999. '12th Fail,' a 2023 movie starring Vikrant Massey, also included Dr. Vikas Divyakirti as himself. The challenges and victories of UPSC applicants were shown in the movie.

Vikas Divyakirti's last posting was as a section officer in the Department of Official Language in the Ministry of Home Affairs, New Delhi. He resigned after a year to return to teaching and found the Drishti IAS coaching institute in 1999.
