Watch: Day after maiden Test call-up for IND vs AUS series, Sam Konstas dismissed for duck in Big Bash League

Just a day after receiving his first Test call-up for Australia, young opener Sam Konstas faced a disappointing start during Sydney Thunder's match against Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 on Saturday. Konstas had earned his debut call-up to the Australian Test squad for the remaining two matches against India in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.

The 19-year-old promising opener, initially overlooked for the Test squad was selected after Nathan McSweeney's underwhelming performance in the first three matches against India. Konstas is anticipated to replace McSweeney in the starting lineup and may open for Australia in the 4th Test against India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) beginning on Thursday, December 26.

All eyes were on Konstas as he took the field against Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League on Saturday. Opening the innings alongside David Warner, the right-hander unfortunately failed to score any runs. He was dismissed for a duck off just three balls by West Indies spinner Akeal Hossein who bowled a superb delivery to clean him up.

Konstas, who has been in exceptional form in domestic cricket recently, entered the crucial match against the Sixers following a stellar half-century performance against the Adelaide Strikers in the BBL 2024-25 season. The talented 19-year-old showcased his skills with a brilliant knock of 56 runs, leading his team to a thrilling 2-wicket victory. Expectations were high for Konstas to continue his impressive form against the Sixers on Saturday but unfortunately he fell short.

Australia made several changes to their squad for the upcoming 4th and 5th Tests against India with Konstas replacing McSweeney. Additionally, Jhye Richardson and Sean Abbott have been brought in as cover for the injured Josh Hazlewood. The Australian selectors have also included all-rounder Beau Webster in the squad for the remaining two Test matches against Rohit Sharma's side.

The ongoing five-match series is currently level at 1-1 following a draw in the third Test at the Gabba. The teams are set to face off in the Boxing Day Test at the MCG, commencing on Thursday, December 26th.
