Karun Nair resumed his remarkable performance in the 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy during the second semi-final on Thursday, January 16, against Maharashtra, who were led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, at Baroda's newly built Kotambi Stadium. Both teams are competing for a spot in the final against Karnataka on Saturday, January 18.

Nair entered the crease at number three in the 25th over, following a brilliant opening partnership of 224 runs between Dhruv Shorey and Yash Rathod. The Vidarbha captain maintained his good form, posting his sixth 50+ score in seven innings, going undefeated on 88 off 44 balls to help his team to 380 runs.

Nair has now surpassed Gaikwad's record for most runs by a captain in a single season of the tournament. The 33-year-old has scored 752 runs in the competition, been removed only once, and has a staggering average of 752.

He is the only skipper to score over 700 runs in a season while leading a team in India's premier List A league. Previously, Gaikwad set the record for 660 runs in five innings during the 2022-23 season, averaging 220 and four centuries.

This season, Nair has five centuries, tying Tamil Nadu's N Jagadeesan for the highest in a single season. Nair has a chance to break Jagadeesan's record for most runs in a season (83). If Vidarbha advances to the final, a score of 79 or higher will propel the right-handed batter to the top of this coveted list.

During the tournament, Nair achieved an astonishing feat by scoring the most runs without getting dismissed (542) in List A cricket history. From 2016 to 2017, he played seven Tests and two One-Day Internationals for India while captaining Vidarbha. Nair, along with Virender Sehwag, is currently the only other Indian to have hit a triple century in Test cricket, having done so against England in Chennai in 2016.

After playing for Karnataka until the 2022-23 season, Nair moved to Vidarbha last season. This is his first tournament as a skipper in any format, demonstrating both his leadership skills and cricketing ability.
