IND vs ENG 4th Test Day 1: Stay updated with all the live coverage from Day 1 of the India vs England Test in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy taking place at Old Trafford, Manchester.
England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to bowl first against Shubman Gill’s India in the fourth match of the five-match Test series at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester on Wednesday.
Following a thrilling victory at Lord’s, Stokes and his team have gained significant confidence and are poised to take an unassailable lead in the series. In contrast, India, reeling from a disappointing collapse and subsequent defeat, faces critical decisions as injuries have impacted their preparations for this match.
In a last-minute addition, Haryana pacer Anshul Kamboj is on the verge of making a remarkable debut for India at Old Trafford, a venue where the team has played only once in the 21st century, back in 2014. Additionally, Karun Nair appears to have lost his place in the lineup, with young southpaw Sai Sudharsan set to take over the No. 3 position in the batting order. Both teams will need to adapt to the humid conditions in Manchester as they prepare for this crucial encounter.
With England leading the series 2-1, the final two Tests in Manchester will be pivotal in determining the outcome of the series. India has showcased individual brilliance throughout, with Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant leading the run-scoring charts, while Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah, and Akash Deep have excelled in the wicket-taking department. The Indian team has amassed eight centuries, including a double century from Gill, and their bowlers have collectively achieved four five-wicket hauls.
Dawson bowled, and Jadeja hit a four over mid on, finishing the over with six runs. Day 1 ended with India at 264 runs. Rishabh Pant got injured and retired hurt, while Sai Sudharsan was out, giving England a chance. Shardul Thakur and Ravindra Jadeja secured the day for India. It remains uncertain if Pant will bat tomorrow.
Pant creates excitement on the field but is in pain after missing a reverse sweep against Woakes. England reviews the play, but the review reveals no conclusive evidence. He struggles with an injury and calls for the physio. The umpires stop the game for drinks so he can receive treatment, yet he remains in distress after the break with a serious bruise on his foot. The umpires decide to bring a stretcher, and Pant must retire hurt. Ravindra Jadeja comes to bat and lets the first two balls go by.
Archer delivers a hard ball to Pant, who pulls it to deep fine leg and takes a single. Sudharsan faces a bouncer with four fielders on the on side for a possible catch. He hits the ball off the bat, but Carse at fine leg misses it, and the ball goes to his right for a four.
Stokes bowls a short ball. Sudharsan hits it and runs for a single. Pant taps the ball and Sudharsan calls for another quick single, which almost results in a close play. The over ends with two runs. This marks the end of the play before Tea.
Gill was given out LBW after a review showed three reds, ending his innings at 12 runs off 23 balls. Rishabh Pant came in to bat and scored a single. Sudharsan hit a short ball for four and then aimed to pull another short ball, which narrowly avoided a leg slip fielder.
Liam Dawson bowls with his left-arm orthodox style. Sudharsan moves back and dodges the first ball, hitting it to the cover for one run. Jaiswal scores two runs by defending a delivery and edging it past the slip fielder. He then hits the fourth ball to sweeper cover for another run. Sai Sudharsan connects with the fifth delivery, sending it to long on for one more run. The players break for drinks in the afternoon session.
Rahul shows signs of uncertainty in his batting today. He hesitates on a length ball outside off, pulling out at the last moment. On the next ball, he tries to cut but gets beaten by the movement. He scores two runs through square leg. Ultimately, he is caught at slips after losing concentration, edging a ball that moves away to Crawley at third slip.
The ball is moving toward right-handers and away from left-handers, hitting Rahul's inside edge several times. He flicks a full ball on the pads, and Archer saves a boundary, getting three runs. Jaiswal attempts a pull on a short ball, which lands before deep fine leg, resulting in five runs for the over.
Carse bowls to Rahul, who plays a back-of-a-length ball outside off and hits it through backward point for two runs.
Rahul then cuts the ball through point for a boundary, finding enough width to play the shot. He follows this with a single to fine leg using a pull shot.
Jaiswal makes a gentle push through the off side, and both players exchange a glance before taking a single that they easily complete.
Woakes bowls to Rahul with a leg slip in place. The second ball is aimed wide but goes too far down the leg side. Rahul hits a half tracker for four, pulling it through midwicket. The over ends with a leg bye through square leg.
Woakes bowls to Jaiswal, and the first ball is outside off, making Jaiswal miss it. The second ball is wider, and Jaiswal does not play it. The third ball is full and wide, and Jaiswal again does not play. Jaiswal edges the next ball, which bounces to third slip but doesn't carry. He then plays a cut shot close to his body, and the fielder at point stops it. Finally, Jaiswal edges another ball, which slips between the second and third slips for four runs.

Shubman Gill: I was actually confused. Good toss to lose. The way we've played in the last three Tests has been outstanding. Some crunch moments we've lost, but we've won more sessions than them. You need a bit of a break. All three Tests were intense. Looks like a good surface. Nice and hard. There's some forecast around for the four-five days. Three changes: Sai Sudharsan comes in place of Karun. Kamboj and Shardul are in as well for Akash Deep and Reddy who are injured.
Ben Stokes: We're going to have a bowl. Decent overhead conditions for bowling. We've had a good break in between. Good chance for everyone to head back home and get the batteries recharged. Everyone left everything out on the field at Lord's. We've had three games go down to the final session, which says a lot about the quality of the teams. Typical Manchester wicket. Quite firm. Some grass. Dawson back in the team - long time since the last Test but he's gone well over the years.
