IND vs ENG 2nd Test Day 1: Stay updated with all the live coverage from Day 1 of the India vs England Test in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy taking place at Edgbaston, Birmingham.
In just a week following their initial Test loss in the new era under captain Shubman Gill, India is contemplating a return to their overseas cricket strategies with several changes suggested for the Playing 11 against England in Edgbaston on Wednesday.
Two years after their shocking defeat at the Birmingham venue, where England successfully chased down a record 378 runs, India aims to strengthen their XI by including three all-rounders to address lower-order weaknesses, hoping they can support a pace attack that will be without Jasprit Bumrah in taking all 20 English wickets. The current mindset, which is predominantly defensive, raises concerns as Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir have quickly shifted from the essential strategy of maintaining a robust bowling attack to secure 20 wickets and win Test matches abroad.
With Bumrah scheduled to rest for workload management, the responsibility will fall on Mohammed Siraj to lead a faltering seam attack and avoid falling short against the aggressive Bazballers. With strike bowler Kuldeep Yadav likely to remain on the sidelines once more, India is optimistic that the decision to field Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Ravindra Jadeja together will help prevent humiliating batting collapses on relatively flat English pitches.
India has scored over 300 runs, which was their target when the openers began batting in the morning. The situation looks positive, with the captain having scored a century and Jadeja nearing 50 runs. It's hard to say which side will be happier, but Shubman Gill stands out as the most satisfied after successfully scoring a well-earned century.
Tongue is having a tough time, giving up 61 runs in 12 overs. Jadeja hits a FOUR with a nice shot. Gill tries to pull the ball on the last delivery but would have hit a boundary if Duckett hadn't made a diving save. Gill is experiencing cramps and asks for the physio after the over ends.
Bashir is back in the game. There are loud shouts for lbw as Jadeja steps forward to defend. He misses the ball, which turns back in, making it a tight decision. England chooses not to review the call, and the ball tracker indicates it was an umpire's call at the wickets, allowing the home side to preserve their review.
Nitish has been dismissed. He faced the ball but it hit the off stump, and he scored only one run. England has taken two wickets in quick succession. Ravindra Jadeja is now batting at number seven. He has scored two runs and England has taken a wicket in that over, giving them control of the game.
Jaiswal has been dismissed by Stokes after scoring 87 runs. He was caught by Jamie Smith after edging a delivery. With this out, Jaiswal misses the chance to be the fastest Indian to reach 2000 runs in Tests, a record held by Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid, who did it in 40 innings.
Gill plays a shot outside off against Woakes, getting lucky as the ball goes past the second slip for four runs. He then defends against a nip backer, but the ball edges thickly and also goes for four, totaling eight runs from that over.
Carse returns to bowl and Nair hits the first ball for a single through cover-point. Jaiswal also gets a single, nudging the ball to fine leg. However, the partnership ends when Nair is caught off a delivery that bounces more than he expected. He tries to play it on the front foot but ends up getting it off his glove to second slip.
Jaiswal starts strong by hitting Tongue for a four on the first ball. He quickly hits another four as Tongue struggles, driving the ball down the ground. The third delivery is short, and Jaiswal tries to pull but only manages to hit it into the ground, resulting in no runs. He defends the fourth ball, which is on the stumps. Jaiswal lets the next delivery go as it is outside off with no movement. He finishes the over with another four, using a late cut between third slip and gully.
Ben Stokes comes in for Woakes. He bowls a full toss to Jaiswal, who hits it through the covers for three runs. Nair plays a shot on the pads, sending the ball through the gap between midwicket and mid on for four runs. Stokes delivers a sharp ball on the fourth pitch, targeting the off stump. It holds its line and challenges Nair, who is fortunate not to edge it.
Woakes delivers a length ball to Nair, who tries to leave it, but it hits his back foot and he is saved by the height. Nair then hits a full ball on the off stump for a boundary through mid off. England believes they have a wicket when Nair does not play a shot, but the DRS indicates the ball is only clipping the wickets, and he remains not out due to the umpire's call.
Rahul faces the first delivery from Woakes and experiences late movement in the air, causing the ball to narrowly miss the stumps. There is an appeal for leg before wicket, but it results in a failure as there was an inside edge. Soon after, Rahul is out; he drags the ball onto his stumps after it bounces unexpectedly, hitting the toe end of his bat.
Carse bowls to Jaiswal, who defends with a full stance. Jaiswal cuts a wide delivery, and Ollie Pope dives to save a boundary. He misses the next ball. England has a wider gully set up for him. Jaiswal hits a full ball through covers for four runs. Carse shortens his length, and Jaiswal fails to connect on the drive. The over ends with a leg bye off a square leg.
England (Playing XI): Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes(c), Jamie Smith(w), Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, Shoaib Bashir
India (Playing XI): Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Karun Nair, Shubman Gill(c), Rishabh Pant(w), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Akash Deep, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna
Stokes: We're going to bowl. Overhead conditions favour it. Very good team performance last week, we're confident. You understand the conditions better as you go deeper into the Test. Brains and me and Baz are not three things you put together. Great run chase, great start to the series.
Gill: Would've bowled first as well. If there's anything in the wicket, it's in the first day. Three changes - Reddy, Washi and Akash Deep come in. No Bumrah. Just to manage his workload. Third Test being at Lord's, we think there'll be more in that pitch so we'll use him there. We were tempted to play Kuldeep but decided to add some depth to the batting.
