Sunil Mittal-led Airtel is gearing up to introduce its satellite internet services in India, potentially taking the lead over Elon Musk’s Starlink, which has yet to secure government approvals. Airtel has built two crucial base stations in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu and is now awaiting spectrum allocation and final clearance from the central government to begin operations, according to reports.
Rajan Bharti Mittal, Vice Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, confirmed the company’s readiness. “As soon as we get the necessary permissions, we are prepared to launch,” he said in an interview with ANI.
Airtel already has 635 satellites in orbit and operates satellite internet services in international markets. The company plans to offer affordable pricing, especially in remote areas, giving it a significant edge over Starlink, known for its higher costs.
While Starlink has gained global recognition for its satellite internet services, its entry into the Indian market may face roadblocks. The company is still waiting for government approval and may struggle to compete with Airtel’s cost-effective approach in India’s price-sensitive market.
In other news, Airtel, Jio, and BSNL users can now make calls using any available network, thanks to the recently launched Intra Circle Roaming (ICR) facility. Introduced on January 17, this initiative allows users to access 4G services from shared towers funded by the Digital Bharat Nidhi (DBN).
