BOLLYWOOD
Despite his success, this actor went through the heartbreaking loss of his 26-year-old son, who tragically passed away due to schizophrenia.
Behind the glamour and fame of Bollywood, many actors face their own personal battles. The stars who bring us joy on-screen sometimes endure tough times in their private lives. One such actor, who won hearts with his powerful performances and later became a global sensation in Hollywood, faced an unimaginable tragedy.
Despite his success, he went through the heartbreaking loss of his 26-year-old son, who tragically passed away due to schizophrenia. This actor's journey is a poignant reminder that fame does not shield anyone from life's challenges.
Yes, we are talking about Kabir Bedi, a renowned actor who became widely known for his powerful roles. He portrayed Emperor Shah Jahan in Taj Mahal: An Eternal Love Story and the villainous Sanjay Verma in the 1980s hit Khoon Bhari Maang.
With a career that spanned both Bollywood and Hollywood, Kabir Bedi gained international recognition, leaving a lasting impression with his versatile performances. However, despite his successful career, his personal life took a tragic turn when he lost his son to schizophrenia, a loss that deeply affected him.
In Italy and across Europe, Kabir Bedi is particularly celebrated for his role as the pirate Sandokan in the popular Italian TV series. He also gained international fame for his portrayal of the villain Gobinda in the 1983 James Bond film Octopussy. With his global career spanning Bollywood, Hollywood, and European television, Bedi has left a significant mark on the entertainment industry. Today, he resides in Mumbai, India, where he continues to enjoy his successful career and personal life.
Kabir Bedi was born on January 16, 1946, in Lahore, which was then part of British India and is now in Punjab, Pakistan. His father, Baba Pyare Lal Singh Bedi, was a prominent Punjabi Sikh author and philosopher, while his mother, Freda Bedi, hailed from Derby, England. Freda made history as the first Western woman to be ordained in Tibetan Buddhism, reflecting the family's unique cultural and intellectual background.
Bedi began his career in theater before making his debut in Hindi cinema. He was one of the first Indian actors to appear in Hollywood films and gained significant fame in Europe as well.
Got married four times:
Kabir Bedi's personal life includes four marriages and three children: Pooja, Siddharth (who is no longer with us), and Adam. His first wife, Protima Bedi, was an Odissi dancer, and together they had two children—Pooja and Siddharth. The loss of Siddharth in 1997, when he tragically took his own life at just 26, remains one of the most painful events in Kabir Bedi's life. In a candid interview, the actor reflected on the deep sorrow he felt after his son's death, admitting that the tragedy left him with lingering guilt.
At an Aaj Tak event, Kabir said, "Whatever I have written in the book is from my heart. I have written about my tragedies in detail as well. Nobody objected to it because whatever I have written is the truth and they know that. There is nothing to hide there. I have had my share of ups and downs, bankruptcy and mistakes which I have written in the book. I suffered great losses due to bad investments. All of this happened when my son was dealing with schizophrenia. I tried to prevent my son from committing suicide but I couldn't and I felt guilty. At the same time, I went through financial disasters. I would go to auditions and did not know what to do. I lost a lot of work due to that. I was emotionally devastated and from there how I built myself again is all a part of my journey.”
Kabir Bedi entered Bollywood in 1971 with his first film, Hulchal. He quickly gained international recognition, especially in the 1980s, when he starred in the popular Italian TV series Sandokan. His fame grew further with his role as the antagonist Gobinda in the James Bond film Octopussy. Despite his global success, Bedi remained active in Hindi cinema, continuing to build his career in India.
