With her debut film Sharmajee Ki Beti, Tahira Kashyap Khurrana has also entered Bollywood. The filmmaker saw the release of her film on Amazon Prime Video last week. Her husband Ayushmann has been one of the most successful Hindi film actors of his generation. In an interaction with DNA, Tahira talks about how cinema is discussed at home and their differing approaches to films.

Ask her if work is discussed at home and an ever-smiling Tahira replies, “Fortunately and with God's grace, it doesn't feel like work. We are super excited about sharing our scripts with each other. He has his stories and his narrations. So I go through all the scripts because I love reading.”

The filmmaker says that their schedules don’t always allow them to watch films together so discussing them allows to have that time together. “Because of his work schedule, you're not able to watch as much cinema as you can discuss. It's fortunate, this place to be,” she adds.

Tahira’s first film released on OTT and was appreciated. On the other hand, Ayushmann has always maintained his preference for the theatrical experience as an actor. “We are both individuals, and there is a lot of leeway and space which we give each other as human beings. There is an inherent understanding of leaving that space for each other for each of us to grow and nurture. So I think that really helps in any relationship actually. He has his own ideology and I have my own,” she says.

Tahira says this divergence of opinion extends to other things in their marriage too, her writing for instance. Tahira has written two books – The Sins of Being a Mother and The 12 Commandments of Being a Woman. Talking about Ayushmann’s reaction to her writing, she says, “At times he considers what I write blasphemous but then too bad (laughs). He was not very happy with the books that I'd written but they were the best and did really well. I went ahead and wrote what I had to write.”

But she explains that it is always respectful between the two of them. “I just feel we are two strong independent thinking people who are doing what we feel is right for our trajectory, our aspirations. We need not always be on the same page, but we will always respect whatever's there on each other's pages,” she says, signing off.

Starring Sakshi Tanwar, Divya Dutta, Saiyami Kher, Arista Mehta, and Vanshika Taparia, Sharmajee Ki Beti began streaming on Prime Video from June 28. It has received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike.
