Emergency vs Azaad box office collection Day 4: Kangana Ranaut ahead of Ajay Devgn, Rasha Thadani despite slow run

The two highly-awaited films, Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency and Ajay Devgn’s Azaad hit the silver screen on January 17, 2025.  Despite both films drawing attention, Emergency has emerged as the stronger performer at the box office. Kangana Ranaut's political drama "Emergency" took an early lead at the box office, collecting Rs 2.5 crore on its opening day, surpassing Ajay Devgn's film, which earned Rs 1.5 crore. The trend persisted, with the political drama attracting moderate audiences despite a sluggish box office pace, outperforming the love drama in subsequent days.

Despite a slow start, "Emergency" drew decent crowds over the next few days, outperforming the competition. The film's performance peaked over the weekend, with collections of Rs 3.6 crore on Saturday and Rs 4.25 crore on Sunday, before dipping on its fourth day. The film collected a mere Rs 29 lakh on Monday. As per Sacnilk, the film had an overall 4.37 per cent Hindi occupancy. Its total collection now stands at Rs 10.64 crore as per the industry tracker. 

In contrast, Azaad had been sluggish at the box office, garnering a modest estimated Rs 4.55 crore in India net collections over its first three days. As of now, the film earned around 0.13 Cr India net on its fourth day. The film opened with a Rs 1.5 crore collection and further earned Rs 1.3 crore and Rs 1.7 crore on Saturday and Sunday respectively. Registering an overall 4.49 per cent footfall on Monday morning, the total collection now stands at Rs 4.68 crore as per Sacnilk. 

Emergency revolves around the Indian Emergency, portraying pivotal political events of that time. Kangana not only stars in the film as former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi but also wrote, directed, and co-produced it. The film boasts an impressive cast, including Anupam Kher as Jayaprakash Narayan, Shreyas Talpade as Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and Milind Soman as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw.  Azaad, on the other hand, is a historical drama directed by Abhishek Kapoor and follows the story of Vikram Singh (Ajay Devgn), a dacoit fighting for freedom in pre-independence India. The film marks the Bollywood debut of Raveena Tandon’s daughter Rasha and Ajay’s nephew Aaman.
