Emergency box office collection day 5: Kangana Ranaut, Anupam Kher film continues to struggle, earns just Rs...

The political drama Emergency was released in the cinemas worldwide on January 17. The film sees Kangana Ranaut portraying the former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and also features Anupam Kher, Milind Soman, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, Satish Kaushik, and Mahima Choudhry in pivotal roles.

In its first four days, Emergency earned just Rs 11.40 crore net in India and grossed Rs 14.50 crore worldwide. On its fifth day of release, as per the early estimates from the entertainment tracking portal Sacnilk, the film added just Rs 1 crore to its domestic earnings. Thus, it's five-day collection stands at Rs 12.40 crore.

Emergency has been caught up in controversy after Sikh organisations, including the Shiromani Akali Dal, accused the film of misrepresenting the community and getting facts wrong. Since its release, the Kangana Ranaut directorial is facing hurdles in Punjab and has seen a very limited release in the state.

The film delves into the Emergency that was imposed by the former PM Indira Gandhi for 21 months from 1975 to 1977 and its aftermath. Emergency was initially slated to release on September 6 but was postponed as the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) delayed its ceritification.
 
The Kangana Ranaut-starrer marks her solo directorial debut after she shared directing credits with Krish Jagarlamudi for the 2019 biographical historical action drama Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, in which the National Award-winning actress portayed the Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi.
