'Bollywood can never make a Pushpa': Anurag Kashyap slams Hindi film industry, says 'they don't have the brains to...'

Anurag Kashyap, who once attempted to revolutionise Hindi cinema through his films like Black Friday, Gulaal, Gangs of Waaseypur, and even provided a platform to tonnes of independent filmmakers, is now "disgusted" by Bollywood. In his most recent interview, the filmmaker slammed the makers in the Hindi film industry, adding that a film like Pushpa can never be made in Bollywood.

Talking about the makers in Bollywood, Kashyap told The Hollywood Reporter India, "They don’t understand anything. They can’t even make a Pushpa. They cannot, because they don’t have the brains to make a film. They don’t understand what filmmaking is. Pushpa can only be made by Sukumar. In the South, they invest in filmmakers and empower them to make films. Here, everyone is trying to create a universe. Do they understand their own universe and how minuscule they are in it? That’s the ego. When you create a universe, you think you’re God."

The Dev.D director further added, "Now it is difficult for me to go out and experiment as it comes at a cost, which makes my producers think about profit and margins. Right from the beginning, before the film starts, it becomes about how to sell it. So, the joy of filmmaking is sucked out. That’s why I want to move out of Mumbai next year. I am going to the South. I want to go where there is stimulation. Otherwise, I will die as an old man. I am so disappointed and disgusted by my own industry. I am disgusted by the mindset."

The sequel to the 2019 hit Pushpa: The Rise, Pushpa 2: The Rule is the highest-grossing Indian film of 2024. With the gross worldwide collections of around Rs 1800 crore, the Allu Arjun starrer is now the second highest-grossing Indian film ever behind Aamir Khan and Nitesh Tiwari's Dangal, which had earned Rs 2070 crore globally.
